Bleeding Hemmroids
Bleeding from the rectum indicates a disease and may not be a disease itself. There are a number of reasons for this bleeding some of which are life-threatening. Most of them can be cured if diagnosed in time. One such condition is bleeding hemorrhoids. It is considered to be a common ailment and is more common in pregnant women. You should make sure you consult your doctor if you notice bleeding before or after the bowel movement and especially if you observe bleeding in the absence of bowel movement. Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins around the anus or the rectum. They may be internal or external. They are not often severe by themselves but bleeding hemorrhoids may be masking more hazardous diseases like rectal or colon cancer. Hence, they have need of proper identification and treatment.The cause of bleeding hemorrhoids can be simply the standing posture in which blood applies pressure on the anal and rectal areas. Other common causes are pregnancy, diarrhea, poor bowel movements, constipation and obesity. In case of internal bleeding hemorrhoids, the stains of blood may be notices on the toilet paper after a bowel movement. You may also notice blood spots on the pieces of stool. Since the bleeding is internal, blood may seep out from the anus even in the absence of bowel movement. The stool that passes the colon may also pick up a small amount of blood.
On the other hand, swollen veins are on the outside of the anus in case of external bleeding hemorrhoids. Bright red spots appear on the toilet paper usually after the bowel movement. A chance of patient having both internal and external bleeding hemorrhoids is a rare but possible situation.
Surgery for hemorrhoids is recommended only if other treatments are unsuccessful or if the bleeding is profuse and when bleeding hemorrhoids lead to thrombosis.
There are some conservative ways to treat hemorrhoids:
- Keep the anal area clean and dry.
- Use a gentle soap or moisturizer. You may also use talcum powder of a soft pad to absorb moisture.
- Eat highly fibrous food. It retains water and produces soft and enormous stool that can pass through easily.
- Drink plenty of water. Drink 8-10 glasses of water and also some fruit juices if possible as fruits contain fibrous elements.
- Exercise regularly. Find out safe exercises and perform them regularly to ease the process of digestion.
- Do not holdup the bowel movement when there is an urge.
Bleeding hemorrhoids are common disorder and often go away by themselves or with nominal treatment. Usually the treatment is simple and effective, although surgery seldom is required. People with hemorrhoids who work strictly with their doctor are usually guaranteed a good effect and relief from bleeding hemorrhoids.
