There are many things you can do to prevent hemmroids. If you already have hemmroids, these will also help to alleviate your common symptoms. Constipation and hemmroids are best friends. The straining during a bowel movement due to constipation will create hemmroids. Try these preventions:
Drink lots of water. You will want to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water. This doesn't include caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee, soda, or alcohol. You want to avoid drinks that will dehydrate you.
Eat lots of fiber. This means eating lots of fibrous fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dried fruits (prunes are great!), and beans (legumes). Be sure to drink water with increased fiber intake.
Use stool softeners. Bran or psyllium can help to provide more fiber in your diet. Don't use laxatives! These may cause diarrhea and this will make the hemorrhoids very unhappy.
Avoid foods that irritate your bowels. You might notice certain foods are irritants like coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, etc. Try cutting these out and see if it makes a difference.
Exercise: Doing exercise (at least moderate levels) regularly will help make bowel movements regular as well.
Immediate bowel movements. When you feel the urge to go, go! Don't hold it in.
Avoid straining during bowel movements.
Don't hold your breath during bowel movements.
Don't bring reading material to the bathroom. As soon as you are finished, leave.
Don't sit or stand for long periods of time. Take a walk even if it's a short one.
Avoid lifting heavy objects. If you do lift, be sure to breathe as you lift. Don't hold your breath.
Pregnant women - Sleep on your side. This will reduce the pressure on your pelvic area.
